The Spirit Intercedes.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And He who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26–27 [ESV]

Was there a time in your life when you saw people pray in tongues and wondered what at all was going on with them? That is if you were not born into a Christian home or you did not find yourself in such an environment growing up. Perhaps when you saw people speak in tongues, they looked and sounded very weird to you. But now that you are in the same family, that is if you are born-again, you probably pray more in tongues than with your understanding.

Every culture or kingdom has a language. Just as we have several languages we speak amongst men on the earth, there is also a heavenly language for people of the kingdom of God. And just as an Indian who speaks and understands only Hindi will not be able to understand a Bulgarian speaking Bulgarian, an unbeliever cannot comprehend what the believer prays about when speaking in tongues. This is because we pray in tongues by the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is so generous that even in our weakness, He comes in to intercede for us according to the will of God.

Our verse for the day clearly points out a weakness in man when it comes to prayer; a lack of knowledge regarding what to pray about. However, the Spirit is so generous that He comes in to intercede for us according to the will of God — what a relief. This means that it is possible for us to pray all the time without praying amiss or outside of the will of God. Again, if not knowing what to pray about is a weakness, then praying in the spirit by the Spirit, is strength. It’s no wonder then that people who pray in tongues often love to pray some more; they have strength on their side.

As believers, we need to speak in tongues. Therefore, if you do not yet speak in tongues ( the language of the Spirit), say a prayer to the Lord about it. Ask the Holy Spirit to grant you utterance. Bear in mind that you must have a desire for it in your heart. Don’t force yourself to conjure any murmurings, only keep your heart open to the Spirit, pray and ask of Him. When that overwhelming babbling begins to rise in your heart, do not fight it.

Dear Father, thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit to intercede on our behalf.
