They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. [Numbers 13:27–28 NIV]

Before we talk about the verse of the day, I would like to draw our attention to the beginning of Numbers 13 which says, “The Lord said to Moses, “Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites.” This enlightens us that the instruction given to the men to scout the city of Canaan was the word of God. The promise He made to Abraham was upon his descendants.

Recounting the history of the Israelites moving out of the land of Egypt, one would believe that the Red Sea encounter initially seemed impossible to overcome. Yet God literally guided them from one shore to the other without hesitation. This would assure them that the word of God holds true. Hence, they must equally play their part in holding on to God’s word no matter what may come their way.

But the men came back and said, amongst all they had seen, that the people who live there are powerful. What was Caleb’s response? He silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” Joshua and Caleb tore their clothes before the entire Israelite assembly in defence of the land and by extension, the word of God. Yet the people continued to treat God with contempt and refused to believe in their Father, just as we do today in the sight of discomfort or any difficulty in our planned lives, despite His promised love and word that only seeks our good.

Holding on to God’s word exempts you from unforeseen consequences and guides you into God’s promises for your life.

For what Joshua and Caleb did amid opposition, God said, “Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb and Joshua [Numbers 14:30].

Who says that because you are a young believer, you have a long way ahead of you and are allowed to make all the mistakes you want or be fleeting? Caleb and Joshua were young but knew well to take the right stance. You can do same, for you are no different.

We shouldn’t be quick to forget whose word it is that was given and the power it carries. Who was Goliath in the sight of the petite man David and his five stones blessed by God?

Father, I pray today that You bring unto me the remembrance of the power Your word wields and help me withstand the pressure of anything that may stand in opposition to it, that I shall hold on until You say another word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
