“Everyone who hears my teaching and applies it to his life can be compared to a wise man who built his house on an unshakable foundation.” [Matthew 7:24 TPT]

“Our verse for today is part of a chapter that ends a series of teachings Jesus began in chapter 5. By the time He uttered the words recorded in our focal text, Jesus had spoken extensively on our supreme blessedness, the believer’s value, fulfillment of the law, anger, adultery, divorce, making vows, revenge, loving your enemies, giving, prayer, and fasting, money, hypocrisy, effective prayer, the narrow way, the tree and its fruits, and true disciples. Evidently, a lot was shared that day. Thus, Jesus’ remark was to communicate to the crowd, and by extension us, that hearing Him teach or reading the Word alone won’t offer us a get-out-of-jail-free card should we encounter difficulty. Hearing is simply the first step and a good one at that. That is because hearing exposes us to truth and opens our hearts to faith.

“Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom…” Proverbs 4:7 (NKJV)

“But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God — and righteousness and sanctification and redemption” 1 Corinthians 1:30 (NKJV)

Jesus has become for us wisdom and is therefore the principal thing; first in order of importance. As mentioned above, reading the Word is great because it exposes us to the truth.

However, if we are to live a victorious life, one that is unruffled by the devil and his wiles, we must take the Word and fashion our lives after it.

Do not wait to find out the hard way that you have been building your life on sand. Be proactive. Look for scriptures that speak to where you are going, take time out to study them, and then begin to implement the principles that God reveals to you.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the gift of Your Word. Regardless of whether it is popular or not, I ask that You grant me the ability to apply Your principles at all times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
