“I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.” [John 17:4 NKJV]

The goal of leadership is to bring glory to God. When Jesus was at the end of His ministry, He prayed a great prayer, which is recorded in John 17. He said that He had brought glory to God by finishing the work God had given Him to do. We too, as children of Jesus Christ, must have the same goal when it comes to leadership — to bring glory to God. It is not enough to just have this goal, but, we must also live each day striving to achieve this goal.

We exist because of Him, and He called us and ordained us for this purpose. The goal of leadership is not to use the glory to make us famous, neither is it to make us rich in this life. The goal of leadership is not so that we will have the ‘power’ to command people, nor is it to have many people serve us or respond to our needs. The goal of leadership is to bring glory to God.

Our leadership must bring praise and honour to the Lord. The Lord should be able to look at us from heaven and be proud that He called us to serve as leaders. Once God is glorified, we have achieved our goal. People should be influenced by our leadership, so much so that their response will bring glory to God.

Jesus finished what God called Him to do when He walked on earth, and this brought God glory. To finish is to bring to a completion, to make perfect or to accomplish. We must ensure that we complete what God has called us to do.

We must not just start and fail to finish it. We must not just respond to the Lord’s call to leadership and fail to fulfil the assignment He has given to us.

Let’s get to work each day with the aim of completing our God-given assignments in order to bring God glory.

Dear Father, give me the grace to daily run the race You have set before me, as my goal is to bring glory to Your name.
